Hi I’m Marcy Blikre. This passion of basket weaving had a simple beginning – I signed up for beginning basket weaving classes through Moorhead (MN) Community Education. Little did I know it would become more than a simple pastime! I have been weaving for over fifteen years and belong to the Headwaters Basketmakers Guild (Bemidji, MN), Minnesota Basketweavers Guild (Minneapolis, MN), and the National Basketry Organization. I attend a number of workshops each year to learn various weaving techniques and to get new ideas from the teachers and fellow weavers. As a retired educator, I love to teach basket weaving to those interested in this lost art form. A useful basket is one of beauty and purpose. For the past five years, I have sold baskets at various shows in North Dakota (Fargo, Minot, Harwood). I am drawn to weaving utilitarian style baskets using flat or round reed but will also use natural materials such as willow and birch bark. Baskets may have a similar beginning but each is distinctive in size, style, color, and presentation. Selecting a basket is a personal choice, how one uses it depends upon ones’ needs.
