Beginning Rug Hooking Retreat with Cathy Tokheim | November 4-6, 2022

Our class will give you a foundation of information on primitive rug hooking to use as you start your class project. We’ll discuss foundation fabrics for your projects, hooks used, fabric and fiber used and techniques to hook your sweet sheep mat. Rug hooking is a very freeing fiber art since there are a few rules and mostly personal preference choices. The class includes a 12×12″ mat of a sheep, a primitive hook and wool fabric/fiber to complete your project. I give the class an overview and then work with each student throughout our class time to troubleshoot and instruct as needed. Finishing techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. Q&A’s continue throughout the day. We will start class Friday evening to cover some hooking basics and then take up again Saturday morning to hook and learn as we go. Your 12×12″ project would be great for a pillow top, table mat or small wall hanging.

This is an all inclusive retreat! Enjoy staying in one of our unique guest rooms and delicious meals prepared by our Nome Schoolhouse Chef. We will even pick you up at the airport in Fargo. Enjoy a weekend at our cozy, newly renovated schoolhouse.

The student needs to bring a 14″ quilt hoop that can provide good tension and a pair of sharp fabric scissors.

Cathy Tokheim

I have been hooking primitive rugs, mats and wall hangings since 1996. I am a rug pattern designer, fabric dyer, color enthusiast and teacher, exploring rug hooking by challenging myself and my students. I love color and design. Color planning puzzles are the best type of puzzles!
