Participants will learn how to dye any plant based fiber (cellulose) using either quilt cotton or cotton yarns, depending on interest. The basics of how to use fiber reactive dyes along with simple resist processes will be covered (Shibori methods). Although the class does not take place when snow dyeing will be possible, participants will learn how it can be done. Several methods will be possible to explore during the full day class. Enough yarn or quilt cotton will be dyed to complete a full project. The dyed materials will need to be washed out at home (time for the dye to cure) or can be washed out the following day if the participant is taking the Animal fibers class.

This is a 6 hour class. Lunch will be provided, prepared by the Nome Schoolhouse Executive Chef. Please let us know below if you have any dietary restrictions.

Ellen Sakornbut is a fiber artist producing both fiber supplies (yarn and spinning/felting fiber) for other fiber artists as well as finished fiber art-to-wear and home goods. She has taught dyeing, felting, working with rare breed wool, and how to use vintage buttons in fiber art.
